Greetings and happy almost Halloween! Everyone looked fantastic today in their costumes!

1. THIS SATURDAY EVENING – FALL BACK – don’t forget to set your clocks back one hour prior to bed.

2. NEXT WEEK: TUESDAY: Early dismissal for GCS. No afternoon choir activities.
Afternoon – GC Christmas Pageant Interviews, see the attached newsletter for sign up genius for your choristers appointment.

3. NEXT WEEK: THURSDAY Senior Choristers are singing for the GC High School Division Chapel!
To accomplish this, we need to adjust the schedule one more time, this is optional with no pressure, I hope it can work for most families.

THURSDAY MORNING: All Senior Boys and Girls Rehearse in the morning time and move into Chapel from the rehearsal,
following chapel they will go directly to their classes. No special dress required.

FRIDAY MORNING: All Juniors – Boys and Girls together for the morning practice. 7:00 – 7:20 arrival, 7:20 – 8:10 rehearsal.

4. Pie Sale. The Thanksgiving Pie Sale has begun! This fund raising project was designed to help raise money for the first choir tour to
Bristol in 2004. The parents who created it had in mind an activity that with parent supervision would allow the choristers to earn the
some of the money for the cost of their tour. Please encourage your chorister to sell in places you deem appropriate. There is a prize for
the one who sells the most pies! The monies raised by our fund raising impact the lives of the whole community through the chorister’s
time in the choir. The good results of all our efforts are enjoyed by all.

4. Workshopping a special project – French Noels!
Today the Senior Choristers began coaching the texts for a potential Christmas Recording Project! The idea came to me from two
sources – an old recording made by E. Power Biggs long out of print of famous Noel Settings for organ by the great 18th century
organist of Notre Dame – Paris – Louis Claude Daquin and the movie “All the mornings of the world” or Tous les matins du monde. There is a scene in the movie of two sisters – young girls singing a folk song with viol and lute. It’s a lovely scene – the beauty of
this setting made me think of these wonderful ancient noels – the organ variations of Daquin and our Choristers.

My thought is to develop these melodies around the children’s voices with lute, harpsichord and perhaps viol accompaniment in
groups of solos, duos, trio and alternate the singing of the noels with the organ variations played on our new organ. Because it
would involve small ensembles and solos, scheduling difficulties should be kept to a minimum when the time for recording comes.

Today was an early and big step in building the program – using the French Tour and sounds still in the chorister’s ears from it with
the text of the Noels. They did a brilliant job.
My old friend and colleague, Max van Egmond is one of the best at singing french and teaching the
skills necessary for diction in this genre, the choristers had a very succesful session.

Here are a couple of Youtube shorts for you to experience and if you wish share with your choristers. The first is the excerpt from
the movie, pity they don’t have the scene in it, but the still is that of the scene. The second youtube is by my colleague, Oliver Latry,
organist of Notre Dame playing one of the Noels from the collection on the organ of the Chapel Royal at Versailles.

Grace Church CHRISTMAS PAGEANT! Is it that time already! November 3 is audition day! Check out the pageant bulletin board for information and sign up for your choristers audition. This is a wonderful project especially for novice and junior choristers!

FACE BOOK: Did you know there is a Music at Grace Church Facebook page? There is. We use it to get the word out about all the musical offerings that take place at the Church especially those of the choirs!
HELP US build the community of followers and listeners to the choirs – FRIEND THE Music at Grace Church page and let the word spread 

RECRUITING is never over!
We have an amazing group of novice choristers for the fall term but…
If anyone asks, it is never too late to join the choir and they should reach out to me at:

For entering 4th graders it is also not too late to join as novices, we have had good luck at getting them up to speed quickly as your children are the best teachers. What schedule a 4th grader might follow would depend on the boy and his family.

We have been asked to consider making musical presentations at the Christmas Market this year. It could be great fun, however – you are busy people. If we had to choose from blocks of time to present on Wednesday and/or Friday between 4:00 and 6:00 p.m. what would work best for you and your choristers schedule? I’m just visioning at the moment nothing is set. Your feedback would be very helpful in creating something that is doable and fun. Potential presentations could involve all choristers at some point, but most likely not all at the same time.

SIGN UP GENIUS: Melinda Weir has organized our sign up for helping with choristers activities through sign up genius. She does an amazing job at this, make sure you say Thank you! Sign up Genius has been very practical in making the sign to help as a choir parent helper easy and efficient. HERE IS THE LINK:

Please find a time to watch and listen to these Youtube excerpts. They are from some of our fellow choirs around the world and are lovely and fun. They can help give us all a better idea of our tradition and celebrate the 1000 year old heritage that we participate in. I was in Wells this week and really, the church and choral tradition is just shy of it’s 1000th birthday! This year is the 120th birthday for our choir foundation.
